Harry Wichmann is shown standing near the pumps at his Standard Oil service station located in Steger at the northwest corner of Thirty-fourth Place and Chicago Road. The station was built in 1929 and has had a number of owners and uses over the years. The building still stands and remarkably retains much of its original look. A hair salon and now a used car dealer have been recent occupants. (Courtesy Steger Historical Society.)

Alice Giebel operated this neighborhood store in Steger at Thirty-seventh Street and Chicago Road, the Dixie Highway, during the 1930s and early 1940s. Small stores like this, festooned with advertising for products like Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Salada tea, Mail Pouch tobacco, and Philip Morris cigarettes, were commonplace along the highway during this time frame.
